Struck on Australian Sixpence Planchet
World War II-Era Mint Error
1943-D 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Australian 6p Planchet --
Cleaned, Scratched -- NGC Details. AU. The Denver Mint was
outsourced to produce silver coinage for Australia during World War
II, as the Australian mints were unable to meet wartime demands.
Since the silver alloy of an Australian sixpence planchet is
similar in color to the usual steel alloy for a 1943-D cent, some
wrong planchet error coins such as this AU-level piece were struck.
This example is well-centered with full rims and light
champagne-silver toning. The strike is soft on Lincoln's shoulder,
ONE, and AMERICA as the undersized flan could not completely fill
the dies. During its brief stint in circulation it was scratched on
both sides and lightly cleaned, denying it a numeric grade from
NGC. Nevertheless, it is a significant piece, as all off-metal
cents from 1943 are coveted for their affinity with the famous
bronze 1943 cents.
