Description

1943-P Nickel, MS64
Struck on a Steel Cent Planchet

1943-P Jefferson Nickel -- Struck on a Type One Steel Cent Planchet -- MS64 NGC. 2.9 gm. A lustrous and essentially brilliant example of this one-year-only off-metal combination. This 1943-P war nickel was struck on a blank meant for steel cent production. Likely, the cent planchet passed through the upset mill, but did not receive a proto-rim since the upset mill was set for nickel planchets. The date and mintmark are visible in their entirety, though certain elements at the left periphery on each side are partly cut off.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2009), lot 1336, which realized $9,775.
