1943-S Jefferson Nickel on a Steel Cent Planchet MS64

1943-S 5C Jefferson Nickel--Struck on a Steel Cent Planchet--MS64 PCGS. A lustrous silver-gray example with delicate gold toning on the reverse. Nicely centered for a wrong planchet error, since all legends are essentially complete, although peripheral letters are drawn toward the rim, as usual for the error. Despite the undersized planchet, the major devices are sharply struck. The steps are not full, but only the bottom step is weak. The zinc-plated steel alloy was used on the U.S. cent only in 1943, although Belgian 2 franc pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1944 and used the same composition. Because of the fame associated with the 1943-dated bronze cents, related wrong planchet errors on 1943 coinage are highly prized. A real challenge would be a denomination set struck on steel cent planchets. Start with this nickel, and complete the set with the quarter, and half dollar. Since this type of error is not possible on a dime, the similar 1943 cent on the dime planchet offered in this sale would be a nice way to round out the collection.
