Description

1944 Washington Quarter, MS62
Struck on a 'Steelie' Cent Planchet

1944 25C Washington Quarter -- Struck on a Zinc-Plated Steel Cent Planchet -- MS62 NGC. 2.7 grams, equal to the statutory weight of a "steelie" cent. The magnetic zinc-plated steel cents were struck in 1943, and the alloy was also used in 1944 to strike a much smaller quantity of 2 francs at the Philadelphia Mint for war-torn Belgium. One of the aforementioned zinc-plated steel cents, in use for only two years, ended up between 1944 Washington quarter dies, to become this off-metal mint error. Our auction archives reveal only one prior appearance of this wrong planchet combination, an AU details example, likely dated 1944, as lot 4971 in our November 2013 New York Signature. The present Mint State example was struck flush with the collar die near 6 o'clock, and has a bold date. LIBERTY and (appropriately) the denomination are altogether absent. Somewhat oval with a bulge at 12 o'clock, whether outward expansion was unrestrained by the collar die. Satiny and unabraded with oxidation on the eagle's chest, belly, and legs.
