Description

1964-Dated Kennedy Half, MS65
Full Brockage Reverse
Uncentered Broadstrike

1964-Dated 50C Kennedy Half Dollar -- Huge Broadstrike, Full Brockage Reverse -- MS65 PCGS. A 1964 or 1964-D half dollar (not the present coin) clung to the reverse die during its initial strike, and failed to eject. One or more planchets (also not included) were then fed between the obverse and the obverse of the previously struck coin (a reverse die cap). A planchet was then fed in (to become the present coin) and was also struck between the obverse die and the obverse of the die cap. The strike was an uncentered broadstrike with a full brockage reverse. The reverse displays a reversed, incused, and expanded obverse image. IN and TRUST are absent, confirming that at least one brockage strike preceded the striking of the present coin. Attractive medium tan-brown toning visits both sides. 1964 was the only year that the Kennedy half dollar was struck for circulation in a 90% silver alloy. The first-year production was at both Philadelphia and Denver. Unlike later issues, which have an obverse mintmark, the 1964-D exhibits a mintmark on the reverse near the tail feathers. For the present coin, the mint is unknown due to the brockage reverse.
