Description
1972-D Washington Quarter, MS62
Foreign Planchet Struck Into Obverse
Brass Philippines 5 Sentimos
1972-D 25C Washington Quarter -- Philippines 5 Sentimos Planchet
Struck in Obverse -- MS62 NGC. 8 grams. The Denver Mint struck
90 million brass 1972-dated Philippines 5 sentimos; 71,744,000
pieces during 1972 and another 18,256,000 pieces during 1973. A 5
sentimos planchet became mixed in with Washington quarter
planchets, and was fed together with a quarter planchet between
Washington quarter dies, with the 5 sentimos planchet between the
obverse die and the quarter planchet. During the strike, the 5
sentimos planchet was struck into the obverse of the Washington
quarter planchet, flush with the collar die at 9 o'clock. A clad
Washington quarter should weigh 5.67 grams, and a 1972 Philippines
5 sentimos should weigh 2.5 grams. The combined statutory weight of
the two coins is 8.17 grams, fairly close to the actual 8 gram
weight of the present lot. Portions of the reverse border are
lightly brought up, especially AMERICA which has a ditch-like
unstruck area opposite the area without the 5 sentimos planchet. A
couple of thin test marks are on the reverse near 3 o'clock.
