Detached Silver Reverse Layer
1972-S $1 Silver Ike Dollar--Detached Silver Reverse Layer--PR63
PCGS. The 40% silver Ike dollars, like the 40% silver Kennedy
halves of 1965 to 1970, were "sandwich" coins that had thin outer
layers of 80% silver and an inner core of primarily copper alloy.
On the present specimen, a portion of the reverse outer layer
detached after striking, perhaps due to gas trapped within the
coinage strip between the core and outer layer. The obverse has a
normal appearance, but the reverse displays the green-gold and rose
copper core between 1 o'clock and 5:30. The detached reverse layer
fragment has a nearly straight left edge, and is housed in a
separate PCGS holder graded PR63 Deep Cameo. The "obverse" of the
thin reverse fragment exhibits an incused and reversed image,
impressed through the fragment during the strike.
