Description

1973 Jefferson Nickel, MS64
Reverse Bonded Copper Planchet

1973 5C Jefferson Nickel -- Reverse Bonded Copper Planchet -- MS64 NGC. 5.7 grams. A typical Jefferson nickel weighs 5.0 grams. A 1973 cent weighs 3.1 grams. It appears that a very thin bronze cent planchet (perhaps from a cent planchet that split across its horizontal plane) became mixed in with Jefferson nickel planchets, and was fed together with a normal Jefferson nickel planchet between 1973 nickel dies. The cent planchet fragment was struck between the reverse die and the nickel planchet. The two planchets bonded across most of the reverse, leaving a shallow inner copper center and a narrow outer copper-nickel ring. The obverse has a normal appearance. The inner copper circle on the reverse is toned orange-gold, fire-red, sky-blue, sea-green, and magenta.
