Description

1977-S Nickel, PR68 Cameo
Struck Over a 1977-S Dime
Double Denomination

1977-S 5C Jefferson Nickel -- Overstruck on a 1977-S Dime, Double Denomination -- PR68 Cameo NGC. Double denomination coins are usually Lincoln cents struck on dimes. But here is a nickel struck on a dime, and in proof format. The dime was rotated almost exactly 180 degrees relative to the nickel dies, with the dime obverse facing the the nickel reverse die. On the nickel obverse, most of STATES from the dime remains apparent on the truncation of Jefferson bust. On the reverse, the dime date and mintmark is clear, as is LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Roosevelt is inverted relative to Monticello. The copper core of the dime squeezed out slightly during the strike, and overlaps the obverse margin between 7 and 12 o'clock. Struck aligned with the collar at 4:30, with most of IN GOD WE TRUST (from the strike as a nickel) off the flan.
