    Description

    1978 Ike Dollar, MS63
Struck on a 22% Defective Strip

1978 $1 Eisenhower Dollar -- Struck on a 22% Defective Planchet, Improperly Bonded Strip -- MS63 PCGS. The coinage strip, used to punch out blanks, was defective. The outer clad layer was partial due to improper bonding between the inner pure copper layer and the outer copper-nickel layer. The present coin began its life as a blank punched from that strip, with a vertical depression on one side where the outer layer was absent. It passed through the upset mill, then was struck with the flan defect facing the obverse die. The strike is soft on the obverse where the strip was defective, and also soft on opposing portions of the reverse, due to incomplete metal flow into design recesses. The obverse has a coppery-red color derived from the copper core. The reverse has the usual cream-gray color of a clad dollar. The date is mostly absent but the 8 is visible. The reverse exhibits a few thin test marks made by a curious finder.
