Description

1980-D Lincoln Cent, MS62
Struck on a Silver Planchet

1980-D 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Silver Planchet -- MS62 NGC. 2.1 grams, less than the standard weight of a clad dime (2.27 grams) or a 90% silver dime (2.5 grams). The U.S. struck coins for the Dominican Republic and Panama in 1980, but the sole silver issue struck by the U.S. in that era was the 1980 ten balboas (0.500 Fine silver) with a standard weight of 26.5 grams. This unusual off-metal mint error has semiprooflike fields and is surprisingly unabraded. Both sides display a few dark spots that limit the grade. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has a stretched appearance, consistent with a strike on a slightly undersized planchet. The rims are complete only on the upper obverse and lower reverse, which confirms the coin was aligned with the collar die at 12 o'clock during the strike.
