1982 Bronze Lincoln Cent, Captivating Bonded Strike
1982 1C Bronze Cent--Obverse Die Cap, Bonded Strike, Brockage--MS 63 Red and Brown. This is a fascinating coin that really fuels the imagination. The first planchet was fed into the press, received a proper impression, but failed to eject properly. The nearly perfect obverse then became an obverse die cap. At least 15 subsequent planchets were then fed into the press, each piece in turn being struck with the obverse die cap and an unobstructed reverse die. Instead of ejecting, each planchet became bonded to the previous and continued to wrap around the obverse die with subsequent impressions. As such, each planchet shows distended peripheral lettering on the reverse. At the end of the process, the final planchet was struck into the obverse of a struck cent. The resulting brockage is readily evident on the bottom of the bonded stack. An interesting and scarce error with considerable visual impact.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22HN, PCGS# 3046)
