Description
Interesting 1998-P Washington Quarter, Double Struck, Stretch Strike
1998-P 25C Quarter--Double Struck, Stretch Strike--MS 64. This is a fascinating piece. The planchet was struck once and failed to eject properly. Before the second striking, a blank planchet was fed into the press and overlapped about 80% of the obverse. During the second striking, the reverse received another, 10% off center impression that effaced all but about 10% of the first impression. The obverse, on the other hand, did not come into contact with the hammer die again. Instead, the overlapping planchet pressed into about 80% of the obverse with the result that the design elements have become greatly elongated. The planchet that overlapped the coin that we offer here would be an equally interesting item. The obverse of the other planchet should show an off center impression from the hammer die on its obverse and a partial brockage from the obverse of this coin as its reverse.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 248V, PCGS# 5942, GSID# 24989)
