Description
Multiply Struck Gem 1998-P Nickel
1998-P 5C Jefferson Nickel--Struck 100 Times--MS65 ANACS. The planchet feeding and ejection mechanism apparently became inoperative with the present piece between the dies. Repeatedly struck, a partial collar restrained the left border, while the right border was not impeded by the collar after the initial strike, and metal flowed gradually in that direction between strikes. LIBERTY, the date, the mintmark, UNUM, AMERICA, and the right edge of Monticello all have a stretched and illegible appearance as a result. The 19 in the date is obvious; the final two digits of the date and the mintmark cannot be confirmed. Lustrous with light golden-brown and steel-blue toning.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22XM, PCGS# 4142, Greysheet# 3459)
