    1999-P Delaware Quarter, MS66
    On a Experimental Planchet

1999-P 25C Delaware Quarter -- Struck on an Experimental Planchet -- MS66 PCGS. In 1999, the U.S. Mint prepared to strike dollar coins in a "golden" manganese alloy to replace the unloved Anthony dollar. Apparently, the alloy was devised before Sacagawea dollar dies were available for testing. Instead, a small number of state quarters were struck on the experimental manganese alloy planchets. Examples are known for each of the five 1999 designs: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. This is a sharply struck and lustrous Premium Gem with exemplary preservation. The open field display olive-green toning. The peripheral legends spread moderately toward the rim, characteristic of a broadstrike or undersized planchet.
