Description
Gem 1999-P Georgia Quarter on an Experimental Planchet
1999-P 25C Georgia Statehood Quarter--Struck on an Experimental Planchet--MS65 PCGS. The U.S. Mint conducted alloy experiments in 1999 on all five Statehood Quarter types, in preparation for the following year's Sacagawea Dollar. Four experimental composition types are known, either with gold or greenish color, and with and without a copper core. The present piece has the brassy color of a Sacagawea Dollar, but it is unknown whether it contains a copper core. In any event, an extremely rare mint error, surely these pieces were not supposed to enter circulation. A lustrous and well struck piece, beautifully preserved aside from a series of wispy marks along the lower right reverse.(#5950) (Registry values: N14)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 249K, PCGS# 5950, GSID# 5773)
