    2000-Dated Sacagawea Dollar, MS66
    Obverse Capped Die

    2000-? $1 Sacagawea Dollar -- Obverse Capped Die -- MS66 NGC. The first strike for this 2000-dated Sacagawea dollar was normal, except that it attached to the obverse die instead of getting ejected. The coin was struck at least one more time without an additional planchet in the coinage chamber, then it served as a die cap against a series of fed-in planchets. From the first strike, the upper half of LIBERTY is visible on the upper right obverse border, as is the lower half of ONE DOLLAR on the lower right reverse. From the second strike, a distorted ONE DOLLAR is apparent above that legend from the first strike. From the final strike, Sacagawea, Jean Baptiste, and the date are bold. The central reverse is featureless since that portion of the coin was struck against a series of planchets. The strikes expanded the diameter and forced a wide split at 6 o'clock relative to the final strike. Extreme shelf doubling on the obverse effaced the mintmark, as made.
