Description
2000 Lincoln Cent, MS66
Struck Over a Sacagawea Dollar
2000 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Sacagawea Dollar -- MS66
PCGS. A remarkable double denomination error. The first strike
was normal, between Sacagawea dollar dies on a Sacagawea manganese
alloy planchet. Somehow, despite the great disparity of diameter,
the coin ended up between Lincoln cent dies, and was struck a
second time. The collar die was either absent, or unable to rise
above the anvil die due to the large dollar diameter. The cent
strike is at 4:30 relative to the dollar strike, nestled just
inside the dollar rim. The peach and sea-green surfaces appear
pristine aside from dollar edge depressions at 11 and 5 o'clock,
perhaps caused by the outskirts of other cent dies within the cent
press. The date of the Sacagawea dollar was effaced by the
subsequent cent strike, but since the series was introduced in 2000
and the cent is dated 2000, it is safe to presume that the dollar
also bore that date.
