Extremely Rare Cross-Denomination Die Clashing
1864 Large Motto Two-Cent Piece--Cross-Denomination Die Clashing--MS 60 Lightly Cleaned. This is one of the most fascinating errors we have ever encountered. It was originally sent to us by the consignor perhaps six months ago. He wanted an opinion as to what exactly had happened on the reverse of this coin. He believed it had been clashed with a half cent die from the 1790s. But that seemed impossible even for the most resourceful mint personnel. There was, however, definitely a clashed portrait of some coin other than a two-cent piece. We thought it might be clashed from a three-cent nickel obverse, but not being sure we obtained the owner's permission to send it to Bill Gibbs at Coin World. A few weeks later Collector's Clearinghouse devoted all of page 118 of the September 16, 1996 issue to this coin. Gibbs conclusion (with Bill Fivaz' assistance) is that the reverse was clashed from an Indian cent obverse die.Why such an unusual die clash occurred is not known. The chief suspect is Frederich Eckfeldt, grandson of Adam Eckfeldt, a young man who was once fired from the mint for stealing. It is believed he struck a number of rare coins for collectors, including 1804 dollars. Such cross-denomination die clashes are extremely rare. The best known ones occur on three different 1857 Flying Eagle cents. These coins are clashed with the reverse of a Seated quarter, the obverse of a Seated half, and the third from the obverse of a double eagle (!).
The clash is seen starting below the T in CENTS and extends upward through the field and terminates at the outer curve of the 2 in the denomination. In addition, on the reverse there is a circular die crack below CENTS and what appears to be die rust at the top of that side. Otherwise, the coin is bright overall with signs of having been lightly cleaned at one time. This is an extremely rare opportunity for the advanced error collector. This is the first cross-denomination clashing we have handled and it may be many moons before we see another.
