Struck Through Die Cap, Broadstruck Jefferson Nickel

Undated 5C Jefferson Nickel--Broadstruck, Obverse Struck Through Die Cap--MS65 Six Full Steps NGC. The reverse is a broadstrike with a partial knife rim and a "flame" clashmark over Monticello. The upper obverse has soft design details, as it was struck through a late stage die cap. The lower obverse has an irregular, nearly featureless surface in much lower relief. This piece apparently represents a planchet and a planchet fragment fused together by the strike, given the hint of a different obverse showing at 11 o'clock. (PCGS# 74000)
