No Rays Type
Planchet Split Before Striking

Undated 5C Shield Nickel, No Rays -- Split Planchet Before Strike -- NGC. 2.3 grams. The planchet split before striking, so the portion of the planchet that entered the coining chamber was much thinner than normal, meaning few details were struck up.
Considerable luster and a trace of wear suggest a grade of AU, although the grade of any similar error is subject to considerable discussion. The light gray obverse displays just enough detail for positive identification, and the charcoal-brown reverse retains only sufficient detail to be sure of the No Rays type.
