Description

Remarkable MS64 Reverse Die Cap on a
Copper-Nickel Indian Cent

Undated Copper-Nickel Indian Cent -- Reverse Die Cap -- MS64 NGC. The copper-nickel alloy indicates the coin was between 1860 and 1864. A cent (not the present coin) clung to the obverse die after its strike. The present piece was then fed between the reverse die and the previously struck cent. This initial strike caused it to adhere to the reverse die with an incused and reversed impression (a brockage) of the reverse design on its obverse. It then struck additional fed planchets, causing the present piece to expand in diameter, though it is not cup-shaped since the collar die was apparently blocked or broken away. The additional strikes caused the obverse brockage to expand and become misshapen, although ONE CENT and other incused, reverse design elements are recognizable. Well preserved with olive-brown and orange-gold toning.
