Description

Kennedy Half Dollar, MS64 Red and Brown
Struck on a Copper-Zinc Planchet

Undated Kennedy Half Dollar -- Struck on a Copper-Zinc Planchet -- MS64 Red and Brown NGC. 2.4 grams. The NGC insert displays the alloy as 83% copper and 17% zinc. A pre-1982 bronze cent weighs 3.1 grams. A post-1982 copper-plated zinc cent weighs 2.5 grams and is almost entirely zinc. The U.S. struck coins for Panama and the Dominican Republic during the early 1980s, but none of those coins match the alloy. Likely, the Kennedy half was struck circa-1982 on an experimental cent planchet. It was fed solo between the dies, and struck by both sides. Much of the first 1 in the date is present, but the mintmark and remainder of the date are absent. The strike shows all of Kennedy's face, and all of the eagle's head, left wing, and left leg. The rose-red surfaces are attractive. The coin shape is oval, with a height that exceeds the width.
