American Silver Eagle, MS62
Struck Thru Sand Disk
Undated Silver Eagle -- Struck Thru Sand Disk -- MS62 PCGS.
An emery disc is thin, round, granular, and adhesive-backed. It is
typically affixed to a buffing wheel, and was presumably used at
the Mint to help prepare dies. Somehow, an emery disc with an
unpeeled backing covered a silver eagle planchet at the moment of
strike. The outcome is a first-year 1986 silver eagle with a normal
reverse and a 100% struck-through obverse. The obverse has a rough
matte appearance, as made. A thin diagonal test mark is on the
right obverse. Though the date is unlisted on the PCGS insert, it
is faintly evident on the coin itself.
