    Description

1876 Centennial Exposition, Leather Case with Two Enclosed Medals. 140 mm x 80 mm. The tan-brown leather case encloses two Uncirculated white metal medals under transparent media. Both medals are the same variety with the obverse and reverse respectively showing. The medals depict the Art Gallery and Main Building from Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. The specifications for the medal are 51 mm diameter, 4.65 mm thickness, and weight 38.76 gm. The bottom of the case shows incused lettering PATENT SEPT 14 1875. Accompanying the lots are printouts of U.S. Design Patent #8,647, filed August 9, 1875, and received September 14, 1875, which lists the inventors of the medal as Wm. B. Cunningham and Philip Hill of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cunningham and Hill earlier secured a different U.S. Design Patent, #7,167, filed January 29, 1874 and received March 17, 1874. That medal was likely struck by Nichols, Pickering & Co. of Philadelphia, which suggests that the present medals were also issued by that firm.
