    Description

1892-93 Official Columbian Exposition Awarded Medal in Bronze, Eglit-90, with Original Metal Box of Issue, Gem Uncirculated.
Bronze, 76.3 mm, 204.5 gm. This award medal is inscribed on the reverse to W. KENNEDY. As the medal that began the longstanding feud between Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Charles Barber, this medal needs little introduction to those well-versed in the field. This piece, with the noted inscription (most pieces seen are either unawarded or, occasionally, have the awardee's name removed) in the award space, presents in the most outstanding and superb condition of any example we have seen. It highlights Saint-Gaudens' mastery of the small space and the contrast between the two artists' styles. The surfaces are a lush, deep and even rich reddish-mahogany throughout, and the specimen has clearly been preserved with loving care since its presentation -- a state of preservation made easier by the presence of its original plush-lined storage box, an "Aluminum Case made by Scovill Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Connecticut, U.S.A." as the accompanying original card states. A nicer example is difficult to even imagine.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2008), lot 28240, where it brought $977.50.
