Description

1787 Newman 8-B Fugio Cent, MS65 Brown
UNITED STATES Type
Mint Error, 5% Curved Clip

1787 1C Fugio Cent, UNITED STATES, Cinquefoils, N. 8-B, W-6740, R.3 -- Clipped Planchet at 9 O'clock -- MS65 Brown PCGS. Ex: Ford. 129.6 grains per its Ford catalog appearance. A 5% curved clip at 9:30 makes the present lot stand out among other high grade Fugio cents, although the UNITED STATES subtype is scarcer in Mint State than its STATES UNITED counterpart. This is an unabraded golden-brown example that retains faded hints of mint red. Both sides shimmer with cartwheel luster, and the strike is crisp except on the lower obverse and upper reverse margins. One toned reverse planchet void (as made) is noted at 12 o'clock. Listed on page 52 of the 2026 Guide Book. Population for all varieties of this type: 12 in 65 Brown (3 in 65+), 2 finer (6/25).
Ex: F.C.C. Boyd Collection; John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part I (Stack's, 10/2003), lot 248; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 4006.
From The Costa Family Collection, Part I.
