1856 Snow-3 Flying Eagle Cent, AU50

1856 1C AU50 PCGS. Snow-3. Although the 1856 Flying Eagle cents are patterns in the strictest sense, they have been collected alongside the regular issues of the Flying Eagle and Indian cent series for many years. In that regard, the 1856 Flying Eagle cents resemble the 1879 Flowing Hair stellas, also patterns of relatively high mintage collected as part of the complete gold type sets. Rick Snow asserts that the Snow-3 coins were prepared to test for a simulated business strike run, and to provide examples of the proposed copper-nickel cent to members of Congress--another similarity shared with the later stellas.
This Flying Eagle cent has been lightly rubbed, whether as a pocket-piece or through brief circulation, yet its overall eye appeal is strong. Medium tan-brown surfaces are outlined by slightly darker patina. The central devices are well struck with minor but distinct wear mainly on the high points. A single carbon fleck is noted below the knot in the wreath.
