Description

    1856 Flying Eagle Cent
    Borderline Uncirculated Snow-3

1856 1C AU58 PCGS. Snow-3. A sizeable majority of 1856 Flying Eagle cents are Snow-9 restrike proofs, struck a few years after 1856 to satisfy growing collector demand. The Snow-3 cents are business strikes coined in 1856 for distribution to Washington officials. Their purpose was to demonstrate the new small cent, a departure from the cumbersome large-diameter predecessor types. Since millions of Flying Eagle cents were coined dated 1857 and 1858, the type was considered common, and many recipients of the 1856 cents spent their example. PCGS has certified pieces in grades as low as AG3. The present near-Mint walnut-brown cent shows only slight wear on the eagle's breast and the crest of the front wing. Marks are absent aside from a thin mark above the C in CENT. A minor strike-through, as made, is between the ST in STATES.
