Description

Important 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Lightly Circulated Yet Highly Desirable

1856 Flying Eagle PR 55. Breen-1924, Judd-180. High leaf at C, low leaf at T, open 6. An altogether pleasing example of the rarest and most desirable of all U.S. small cent issues. The muted golden surfaces display luster and reflectivity in the protected areas, and the overall aesthetic appeal is outstanding for the assigned grade. A few tiny obverse field marks are present, and there are some shallow depressions on the reverse as well, a few areas where the planchet was struck through wire or some other foreign object prior to striking. All of the diagnostics of this rare date are present; the cusp of the 5 points through the center of the ball of that numeral, the O in OF is nearly square in the center, and the A and M of AMERICA touch at the bottom at a sharp angle to each other. While not a pristine coin, we can practically guarantee that this lightly circulated piece will see spirited bidding activity as it crosses the auction block.
