Description

Popular 1856 Flying Eagle Cent

1856 1C MS 62 PCGS. In his book Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, Rick Snow estimates that 500 of the approximately 1,500 1856 Flying Eagle cents produced were business strikes. Extant examples, as well as their proof counterparts, are among the most highly prized small cents in U.S. numismatics. There are bright prooflike tendencies in the fields, particularly around the devices, but tan-brown patina dominates this coin's outward appearance. In terms of abrasions, the surfaces have the look of a significantly higher grade. The strike is, however, noticeably deficient--a feature that probably explains the MS 62 designation. There is wide repunching on the digits in the date and many of the letters in the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
