Description

Lovely Near-Gem 1856 Flying Eagle Cent

1856 1C MS 64 PCGS. Although produced predominantly for distribution to government officials to demonstrate the new small cent design, the 1856 Flying Eagle was not a carefully preserved issue. Many of these coins "circulated" among Washington notables throughout the late 1850s, during which time they acquired wear and/or abrasions. The present example, however, was most likely squirreled away a short time after presentation. This is a business strike, but the devices are crisply defined and the fields display modest prooflike tendencies as the coin rotates beneath a light. The color is predominantly tan in shade, but streaky orange overtones are intermingled throughout.
