Description

PCGS-Certified 1856 Flying Eagle Cent

1856 1C MS64 PCGS. Snow-9. Of this variety, Snow (2001) states, "Most of the examples from this die pair which exist in high grade show detail and edges which confirm their status as proofs. However, the overall quality of these pieces are not anywhere near that of the regular proof issues of the period. These usually have dull or nonexistent mirrors. Many show striking defects such and lint strike-throughs and planchet flaws." This is an accurate description of the present example, although, curiously, PCGS has certified this coin as a business strike. The strike is razor sharp throughout, and there are modest hints of brightness in the fields, particularly on the reverse. The planchets exhibits laminations (as produced) on both the obverse and the reverse. Richly toned in copper-brown shades with lighter undertones evident at a few angles. We leave the final determination of this coin's status to the bidder.
