Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, MS63
Rare Snow-4 Low Leaves Reverse

1856 1C MS63 PCGS. Snow-4. A rare Snow variety that pairs the Low Leaves reverse (first introduced in 1858) with the Pointed U obverse. The usually seen Snow-9 and Snow-3 varieties have a High Leaves reverse. In his 2001 attribution reference, series specialist Rick Snow concludes that Snow-4 was struck in proof format "most likely near the middle of 1858" with "a surviving population of about 25 pieces" in copper-nickel. A couple dozen additional examples in copper, bronze, or nickel alloy are also known. PCGS certified the present piece as a business strike, likely because the date location is very similar to the more plentiful Snow-3. The strike is razor-sharp and the reflective fields display deep orange and aqua toning when confronted with light. Devoid of contact though minor carbon is noted above the date and near ONE CENT.(Registry values: N4719)
