Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR65
Snow-9, Intricate Strike

1856 1C Snow-9 PR65 NGC. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is the first and rarest date of the small cent denomination. Snow-9 originals were struck in business format in 1856 to demonstrate the new diameter and design to Washington officials. The quantity produced was insufficient to satisfy the burgeoning numismatic hobby in America, and Snow-13 proofs were struck circa 1858 to 1859 to meet collector demand. Despite the restrikes, the issue remains rare today, with only a few thousand pieces known. This fully struck golden-brown Gem is virtually pristine save for a single carbon fleck above the tail and a brief line on the reverse field near 3 o'clock.
