Interesting 1857 Flying Eagle Cent, MS63
Obverse Die Clash With a Seated Half Dollar
1857 1C --Obverse Die Clashed With Half Dollar--MS63 PCGS.
FS-402, formerly FS-003. Snow-9. It was previously believed that
young Theodore Eckfeldt was responsible for this and several other
mysterious die clashings on 1857 cents. However, the fifth edition
of Cherrypickers' states that "recent research by Chris
Pilliod has shown through die cud research that the Flying Eagle
dies were installed in the press with the obverse die in the anvil
(lower) position, while Liberty Seated half dollars had their
obverse die in the hammer (upper) position." The obverse is sharply
struck, while the wreath on the reverse shows the often-encountered
softness. The surfaces have mellowed to a rich brown, with lighter
