Description

1857 Flying Eagle Cent, MS65
Snow-2, Obverse of 1856

1857 1C Obverse of 1856, Snow-2, FS-401b, MS65 PCGS. An elusive Gem 1857 Flying Eagle cent struck from a head die that was hubbed with the 1856 obverse. It is believed that at least five 1857 dies were produced with the 1856 hub. These would have been hubbed in 1856 without the date, which would have been added in 1857. Thus, the creation of an 1857 head die with the 1856 hub type. A wide O in OF is among the most obvious diagnostics of the 1856 obverse. This Gem displays remarkably well-preserved, satiny mint luster with rich tan-gold color. The strike is sharp, and the eye appeal is outstanding. This piece is among the finest Snow-2 coins attributed by the services. Population: 4 in 65, 0 finer (5/16).
