Description

1858/7 MS 64 PCGS. While there are several other overdates in this auction, one should not get the idea that such coins are common. Indeed, they are anything but that, especially in the upper states of uncirculated. This is the finest example we can remember having handled, and it is one of the finest pieces certified by either of the major services. The obverse fields are semi-prooflike, this effect having been created by die polishing. Close examination reveals myriad striations on the obverse which have largely eliminated much of the 7 in the date. However, the die lump above the first 8 is very apparent as is the broken wing tip. The surfaces overall are bright and lustrous with golden-rose color. A few specks of carbon are scattered across each side, these accounting for much of the grade given. Population: 12 in 64, none are finer (5/98).
