Choice 1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent
Rare Early Die State Example

1858/7 1C MS64 PCGS. Snow-1. The 1858/7 Flying Eagle cent was produced when a left-over 1857 die was overdated and pressed into service in 1858. Experts estimate the original mintage at 100,000 pieces, and Richard Snow estimates a surviving population of around 2,000 examples in all grades. Most of the survivors are from late states of the die, when polishing had removed much of the evidence of the underlying 7. Specimens from the earlier die state, like the present coin, are much more desirable than these later pieces. Snow believes only 300 or so examples would qualify as early die state specimens, and knowledgeable collectors prize these coins highly.
The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with bright red and lavender surfaces. The strike is sharp in most areas, but all examples of this issue show a little softness on the eagle's tail feathers. The obverse also shows the characteristic "broken wing tip" that appears on many 1857 varieties. This piece is a remarkable Choice Mint State example of this rare and sought-after overdate. Population: 24 in 64, 5 finer (9/10).(Registry values: N4719)
