1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63
Snow-3, Reverse Lamination
1856 1C -- Reverse Lamination -- PR63 NGC. Snow-3. The
Snow-3 variety was principally struck in 1856 for distribution to
Washington officials. Most examples were coined as business strikes
since they were intended to demonstrate the proposed small cent
denomination. The present golden-brown specimen, however, has
reflective fields and is fully struck. The die scratch below the 1
in the date is unusually clear. Snow writes, "it is entirely
possible that a small pre-production run of proofs were struck
prior to the non-proof press run."The reverse has a retained lamination near the left ribbon end and a flake nearly out above the upright of the E in CENT. A larger retained lamination affects the upper right portion of the wreath, and the lower left border of the lamination is accompanied by a few faint and closely spaced pinscratches.
