    1856 Flying Eagle Cent, AU55
    Snow-3 Original Business Strike

1856 1C Snow-3 AU55 ANACS. Although graded AU55 by ANACS, this example does not seem to show signs of circulation wear. Instead, the blended definition on the extremities of the eagle and wreath is caused by a soft strike. The satiny straw-gold fields do not show marks consistent with circulation, as only a solitary thin radial line is noted at 7:30 on the obverse. The date is strike doubled, and shows repunching on the upright of the 5 characteristic of the die pair. Snow-3 cents are originals, struck in the year they are dated and handed out to Washington power brokers as a demonstration of the reduced diameter of the new small cent. The historic issue has always been prized by collectors for its rarity and as the first of its kind.
