1856 Flying Eagle Cent, VF Details
    Snow-9 Proof Dies

1856 1C Snow-9 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. Proof, VF. The study of numismatics reached mainstream popularity during the 1850s, and the low mintage 1856 Flying Eagle cent was in great demand from nouveau collectors. Backdated proof restrikes of several denominations were unofficially struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the late 1850s, and Snow-9 specimens ranked among the restrikes. The present example was eventually circulated, presumably by a younger relative of an early owner. The tan-brown surfaces are hairlined, but the sole relevant marks are minor rim knocks on the obverse at 1 o'clock and on the reverse at 2:30 and 8 o'clock.
