Description
1857 Flying Eagle Cent, MS66
Among the Finest at PCGS
1857 1C MS66 PCGS Secure. The Mint struck more than 17
million Flying Eagle cents in 1857, compared to fewer than 2.7
million large cents the year before. The high coinage was in
response to provisions in the Act of February 21, 1857, that
allowed for old copper cents and half cents, and various Spanish
silver coins, to be exchanged for the new nickel alloy cents. The
same legislation that created the small cent also repealed the
legal tender status of the Spanish dollar and its subsidiary
denominations, creating an immediate need for new Mint-made
circulating coinage. The Flying Eagle cent circulated extensively,
leaving few high-grade Mint State survivors for modern-day
collectors. This Premium Gem is among the finest 1857 Flying Eagle cents at PCGS, and it is rare as such. The strike is sharp, and the frosty, unabraded surfaces show sharp detail and rich tan-gold color. A loupe reveals tinges of red and green near the wreath bow.
