    1857 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
    A Magnificent, Deeply Reflective Example

1857 1C PR64 NGC. Snow PR-1. With an estimated mintage of only 50 proofs, it seems odd that three sets of dies would be necessary to accomplish such a slight output. This die pairing is easily recognized by the die file mark from the left serif at the top of the I in UNITED to the rim, the diagonal die scratch below the eagle's beak, and the left ribbon end on the reverse that connects with the denticles. As seen on all PR-1 examples, the fields on this piece show extraordinarily deep reflectivity. The bright yellow-green color deepens to a reddish tint around the margins on each side. The most noticeable pedigree identifier on this beautiful near-Gem is a spot between the 5 and 7 in the date.
