Brittany. François II gold Ecu d'Or au chevalier ND (1458-1488) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rennes mint, Fr-96, PdA-1312 var. (with stop between In and TANDE), Dup-334, Boudeau-Unl., Bigot-1205 var. (with stop between IN and TANDE), Jéz-386b3 var. (same). 3.33gm. + • FRΛnCISCVS • DЄI • GRΛCIΛ • | • BRIT?n • DVX (mullet stops), François, crowned and armored on horseback, brandishing sword in right hand, and holding shield in left, advancing right / + • DЄVS • InΛDIVTORIVm • mЄVm • In • TΛnDЄ • R (mullet stops), cross fleuillue with each limb terminating in trefoil, ermines in angles, all within quatrefoil. A scarce and seemingly unpublished legend variety in Poey d'Avant, Bigot, and Jézéquel. Not unusual to find with at least minor evidence of cleaning, this becomes virtually a moot point for such an attractive example at this, its rims unchipped and flan even resulting in a visual quality that few managed to achieve.
