Seldom-Seen FAI Gold Air Medal

"Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) Gold Air" Medal 1968-Dated MS61 NGC, 50mm. 72.7gm. By E. Blin. Awarded to famed Russian aviator, Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin, in recognition for his advancements and innovation in aircraft design. An impressive and undeniably important piece of aviation history, this gold award Medal simply stuns upon first inspection. While the expansive nature of this mid-century gold Medal is quite desirable, the visually captivating design propels this piece to another level, reminiscent of early Art Deco design France was known for. An exceedingly engaging specimen that is sure to pique the interest of those seeking aeronautical-related trophies as one of the two highest awards offered by the FAI.

Sergey Ilyushin began his aviation career in 1921, studying at the Red Air Fleet Engineering Institute. He gained early acclaim for glider design, earning a first prize in Germany in 1925. After graduating in 1926, he worked on aircraft development for the Soviet Air Force and later joined the TsAGI Design Bureau.

In 1933, Ilyushin became head of the design bureau that would become the renowned Ilyushin OKB. He designed the Il-2, the most-produced combat aircraft in history, and the Il-4 bomber, both critical to the Soviet WWII effort. Postwar, he led the development of major Soviet airliners like the Il-18 and Il-62. Honored with high military and scientific ranks, he remained chief designer until retiring in 1970. From 1937 to 1970, he also served in the Supreme Soviet.
