Description

Louis Philippe 5 Francs 1830A, D-89, F-313/1, 24.93g, MS63 NGC. It took France some time to settle down once Louis Philippe I assumed power after the Revolution of July 1830. Four significant varieties resulted: the Type 62A, the 5 Francs, the Provisional Portrait/no ordinal, and the incuse edge (Tranche en Creaux). It is recorded that Louis Philippe "I" personally noted that his coins did not bear his ordinal, "I". It was as if there was not to be a second Louis Philippe (which as history notes, was in fact the truth). In any case, Louis Philippe "I" commanded that his ordinal be added to the legends and this created one of the rarest 5 Francs types, which was struck at only four mints. This example features light, original toning and somewhat lustrous surfaces.
From the Grundy Collection.
