Immensely Important First-Year Presentation 100 Francs

Napoleon III gold Specimen 100 Francs 1855-A SP64 ★ NGC, Paris mint, KM786.1, Gad-1135. A majestic presentation striking of this first-year coinage, extremely rare in this format and to our knowledge, without duplication in private hands. Despite lacking the full mirror-like qualities of a traditional proof issue, this coin was unquestionably produced with special care and purpose, with fields that, as a result of fine vertical die polish lines, are reflective and uniformly presented, rivaling other proof issues of the era. Frosted central designs, as well as peripheral legends, further contribute to the immaculate appearance, adding a wholesome cameo contrast to both sides. Perhaps most convincing of this coin's "special" status is its strike however, with razor-like definition through all the intricacies in the reverse coat-of-arms and rims that square off boldly with the edges. Vivid orange-gold tone that accents all completes the masterpiece. All told, an immaculate coin of immeasurable numismatic importance -- as the first gold coinage of the period, quite possibly the most important coin of Napoleon III's reign.
