Description

Napoleon III of France gold Medal of 2 Taler ND (1856) UNC Details (Surfaces Smoothed) PCGS, KM-X-Unl, Maz-1748B, Guilloteau 3588. By Ferdinand Korn. 41mm. 34.81gm. NAPOLEON III KAISER DER FRANZOSEN. Head, left; signed F.KORN below truncation // GOTT/ SCHÜTZE/ KAISER/ UND/ REICH, below IN MAINZ. Inscription on five lines within wreath. Extremely rare in gold. At the beginning of the 1860s the medalist Ferdinand Korn, who lived in Mainz, commissioned the Frankfurt mint to strike this "double thaler coin" to recommend to the Emperor. The Senate of the city promptly forbade this undertaking, resulting in a very scarce issue.

On December 22nd In 1852, Ferdinand Korn had a medallic coin minted in the Frankfurt Mint in honor of Napoleon III, with which he wanted to apply to the French court. At that time, a total of 11 strikes, six in silver and five in tin, were produced. Later, from the original stamps that Korn had handed over, further strikes were minted in various metals (for details see Eckhart Pick, Das Mainzer Medailleursquartett, Regenstauf 2022, p. 59 ff.).
