Description

Republic gold "Society of French Artists" Third Class Medal 1902-Dated MS63 NGC, 36mm. 28.36gm. By J.B. Daniel Dupuis. A third class Société des Artistes Français medal issued to and engraved with the name of Paul Ivanovitch. It is possible the name is an anglicization of Serbian painter Paja Jovanovic, who was active from 1877 until his death in 1957, and has been represented as such. Considered a prominent Serbian painter of realism and orientalism, he won awards for a number of his creations, such as the Wounded Montenegrin, Cockfight, and The Coronation of Emperor DuŠan. This enchanting Art Nouveau scene features a muse, standing, holding laurel wreaths, while at her side a cherub is seated on a column engraving words into an altar, atop of which lie objects of sculpture and painting. Lemon tones envelop these ethereal figures and wooded background and the high points of reliefs catch the light, casting a radiant glow.

Metal: Gold
